If you've been working with AI and code, you know that one of the tricky parts can be giving the AI enough context, especially when dealing with entire projects.

Well, Gemini just rolled out an update that's a real game-changer, particularly those of us who like to iterate quickly and work with the broader scope of a project...

They've launched a GitHub integration, and it’s pretty slick.

This is fantastic for building things, getting up to speed on a new repo, or rapidly iterating on your work.

Here’s exactly how to try it:

1. Open Gemini Advanced

First off, you'll need to be in Gemini Advanced. This is where the new integration lives.

Once you're in Gemini Advanced, look at the prompt bar where you normally type.

You'll see a little "+" icon. Go ahead and click that and choose “Import code”.

Clicking the "+" will bring up a few options. You'll want to select “Import code”.

2. Paste your GitHub URL

Nearly there! Now, just paste the URL of the GitHub repository you want to work with.

The great news is that this works for both public repositories and your own private ones.

And that’s it. Seriously.

Once you've done that, Gemini essentially becomes a collaborative partner that can read and understand the full context of the repo, not just the lines you feed it.

3. Use-cases

So, what can you do with this newfound power?

Discuss or reproduce any repo instantly:Just paste the link, and you can start a conversation about the code or even get Gemini to help you reproduce parts of it.
Duplicate entire projects:If you activate the "Canvas" feature, Gemini 2.5 Pro can help you duplicate the whole project, giving you a sandbox to play in.
Modify and remix code with full repo context:This is where it gets really powerful. You can make changes, experiment with new ideas, and refactor, all while Gemini understands how your modifications fit into the larger project.

If you’re building anything with AI assistance, or if you're just looking for a smarter way to manage and iterate on your coding projects, you absolutely need to give this workflow a spin.
