Let me walk through step-by-step how to use ChatGPT to write Excel macros in plain English.

Setting Up ChatGPT

The key is using ChatGPT to generate VBA code for you, eliminating manual formulas.

Just use this prompt structure:

“Write an Excel VBA macro to [goal]. My data starts at line X up to line X (counting the headers) lines in the following order:
[Paste your headers]
The name of the sheet is [name].”

Don't forget to display the e-mail images to see the illustrations:

For example:

“Write an Excel VBA macro to sort athletes by increasing age and create a bar chart: Athletes' Weight vs Sport. My data starts at line 3 up to line 376 (counting the headers) in the following order:
Name Sport Nationality Age Wt kg Ht
The name of the sheet is Sheet1.”

ChatGPT will return a macro to execute your instructions!

Running the Macro in Excel

Open the Developer tab and click Macros (if you don't have it, right-click on the ribbon → Customize the Ribbon → Check Developer)
Name your macro, click on "Create" and paste the VBA code
Click run - your operations complete instantly!

Once run, Excel will automatically complete all the tasks described in the original prompt to ChatGPT.

The spreadsheet handles the work, allowing you to simply define the operations in natural language.

Pro Tip

For maximum speed, use Windows Copilot to avoid switching between apps.

Just type your prompt and paste the code it generates!
