If you work with data in Excel, you know how useful and powerful it can be.

But you also know how frustrating and time-consuming it can be to create a good charts in Excel.

You have to write complex formulas to calculate the right data, choose the right type of chart, adjust the parameters, format it, and so on.

But what if I told you there’s a way to process data and create charts without formulas?

I’m talking about Copilot that lets you create charts by asking natural language questions.

It can understand your data, generate the chart for you and more.

And in this newsletter, I’ll show you how to create charts with Copilot in Excel easily and effectively.

Let’s get started!

Excel is largely part of the project I'm working on around Copilot.

It's already well under way, and I'll soon be revealing what it's all about!

1. Turn your data into a table

To use Copilot, you need to have an Excel table that includes data in a worksheet.

If you don’t have one, you can create one by selecting your data and clicking on the "Format as Table button" on the Home tab.

This step is necessary to enable Copilot to read the data.

Once you have a table, you can start asking Copilot questions about your data.

2. Write your prompt

Select any cell in your table and open Copilot.

Here’s a sample prompt you can use:

“Create a [CHART TYPE] that shows [DESCRIPTION]”

For example, you can ask:

"Create a pie chart that shows the distribution of sales by region"
"Create a line chart that shows the trend of revenue over time"
"Create a scatter plot that shows the relationship between price and quantity"

For my data, my prompt is:

“Create a bar chart that shows the average weight for each sport”

Copilot takes care of understanding the data, calculating (here the average weight) and...

3. Insert the chart

Copilot automatically suggests that you insert the chart.

Click on this button to create the new sheet:

It contains the necessary data and the new chart.

You can, of course, modify the chart’s appearance and layout just like any other Excel chart.

Copilot is available for both organizations and personal accounts:

- For personal accounts, simply subscribe to Copilot Pro in addition to Microsoft 365.

- For organization accounts, your administrator must add "Copilot for Microsoft 365" to your account.
