I'll show you how to use AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, to create custom scripts in Google Sheets that will save you hours of work.

1. Determine What You Want to Automate

The first step is to have a clear goal in mind:

What repetitive, time-consuming data processing tasks do you want to automate?

For example, maybe you need to extract specific information from a long text or transform data into a structured table.

The more precise you are with your goal, the better the AI can assist you.

2. Write the Prompt

Now it's time to interact with your AI chatbot.

Open your preferred AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Mistral).

If you're dealing with a complex task, I recommend using Claude 3.5 Sonnet, as it excels at generating code.

Craft a prompt similar to this:

"You are an expert developer specializing in creating App Script scripts for Google Sheets. Write an App Script script for Google Sheets that [YOUR GOAL].

Example:
[AT LEAST ONE EXAMPLE OF YOUR EXPECTED RESULT]."

Providing examples to the AI, often referred to as "few-shot prompting," significantly improves the quality of the generated script.

3. Add the Script to Google Sheets

In your Google Sheets file, navigate to "Extensions" > "App Script."

Paste the AI-generated script into the editor. You don't need to understand the code; the AI has taken care of that for you!

Save the script and click the "⯈" button. Google Sheets will request permission to run the App Script. Go ahead and accept.

Click the "⯈" button again, and watch the magic happen!

Your data will be processed automatically based on the script you've created.

And there you have it!

With the power of AI and a few simple steps, you can automate tedious data processing tasks in Google Sheets. It's like having your very own digital assistant!
